Dedicated Hosting Purchasing Guide
As the hosting term suggests, with dedicated hosting, an entire server and its resources are dedicated to hosting your website. So in other words, it implies that you own an entire server minus the set-up investments associated with it. The dedicated type of web hosting can further be divided into managed and unmanaged dedicated type of web hosting.
The unmanaged hosting plans typically include hardware, operating system, web server and Internet connection. The managed hosting plans on the other hand include all the basic features of a hosting plan and all the other services associated with managing a server.
The company is therefore required to ascertain and analyze all their physical and financial resources at hand required to manage their servers. Most companies prefer the managed hosting plans as these prove to be more cost-effective. For organizations that have a good support department could go in for the unmanaged dedicated hosting option.
A dedicated hosting plan works best for website that need all the server resources at their disposal. This option also facilitates faster and better website performance and the web owner also wields the control to optimize the server as well as the database for the website. With server customization, you can also install and run programs that your website requires and this obviates the need to reprogram the website to fit the server requirements.
The growing websites would definitely benefit from complete access to storage that comes with dedicated hosting. Managed plan customers also have the flexibility to build the website the way they desire without having hardware, operating system, certain software, middleware, security, Internet connection, backup, power backup, staff, casualties & loss prevention even insurance responsibilities.
It is advisable to opt for the Intel processor for large websites when shopping for the dedicated hosting plans. This is primarily because it emits less heat. Celeron is an optimum choice for small websites and for the medium-sized websites, Pentium 4 has proven to appropriate. Dual Xeons are highly recommended for high traffic web sites to give you the processing power; more so if your web site uses a lot of server side scripting. On the average, processor speeds of 2 to 2.4 GHz are good choices.
Also ensure that the server features a memory of 512MB. For websites that heavily utilize server side programming languages (PHP, CGI, ASP), a memory of 1024MB is appropriate. The high-traffic websites can have 2048MB of memory.
With a dedicated hosting plan, it is not easy to migrate between different hosts. It is therefore advisable to opt for a host that delivers quality and reliable services. With a dedicated hosting plan, the support response system is required to be of better quality and reliability than with the shared hosting plans. So in this area you should be clear what to expect from the company's support system. Check for the company's network reliability and find out about their contingency plans in the event of a technical or network failure. Web Hosting Primer For Newbies
If you are planning to launch a low budget web site you will find countless low cost web hosting plans. Sometimes you will get confused after analyzing these plans as they promise everything and sometimes too much in surprisingly low cost.
Define your needs first
The very first thing that should be done is to clearly define your exact needs and requirements. Analyze how much disk space you will need initially and try to anticipate the additional space that will be needed later on. If your site is going to have static pages with few images then even 20MB disk space is enough. But if your site is going to have dynamic pages with audio and video content then more disk space and database is needed. Some low cost plans offer only 1 or 2 databases of limited size ranging from 10MB to 50 MB. Let your technical expert assess how many databases will be needed and how large it can grow in near future. Another important factor is monthly data transfer. If you are going to spend some budget on SEO and advertising of your site then you can anticipate decent amount of traffic within six months. Remember, the bandwidth consumed in maintaining and uploading content on your site is counted in your monthly data transfer quota. So if your site is going to have large amount of fresh content on daily basis then you will need good amount of bandwidth.
Choose the appropriate plan
Once you have clearly defined your web site requirements and features, its time to do some research for choosing the most appropriate hosting plan that will suit your requirements and your wallet. A typical low cost hosting plan comes in the range of $4/month to $6/month. Most hosting providers give discount if the plan is taken for 12, 24 or 36 months, which can save up to 20% of your cost. Carefully read all the terms and conditions before taking the plan as it may have some hidden costs which may haunt you later. The most effective way to get the feedback about the hosting company is to contact existing customers and to hear their opinion. Specifically ask about support services. If existing customers are satisfied with the support services then put this company in your probable list. When you have short-listed all the companies then you can compare their hosting plans and should choose wisely as per your analysis. Always involve your technical expert in each decision making phase. Your potential hosting company should provide 24x7 technical support. After taking the plan you should check the promptness of technical support within one week in peak hours as it is crucial in running your website successfully without any hassle.
It may happen that you may not get good experience with your first hosting provider. Many new web site owners and novice webmasters may experience this situation. Choosing a good hosting provider and right hosting plan comes with experience.

Easy CGI Review
Most of my web design is based around simple HTML pages with a limited amount of ASP and often a lot of media, including my photo galleries and my video portfolio of animations. As a result my requirements for a host aren't that severe and I consider myself a basic user so because of that I really don't like paying over odds for hosting. Thinking back, I've probably paid a lot more in the past than I've needed to for features I just didn't need! Hence, whenever I look out for a new host I tend to be incredibly scrutinizing in terms of exactly what features I'm receiving and love stripped down packages which offer great bandwidth.
Whilst this seems like quite an easy thing to do, it is in fact really quite hard to do! Most hosts love to create a one size fits all solution rather than allowing a basic solution to be built upon as and when a user needs it to be. In the market today there are perhaps a couple of companies that do offer this sort of add-on based hosting plan and the one I decided to go with is easy CGI.
Their basic feature set is quite limited with no support for sub domains or a shopping cart. However, to balance that out there is support for ASP, Perl and PHP as you'd expect. But the real bonus of Easy GCI is their bandwidth and storage amounts. The basic packages comes with 1000Gb of bandwidth coupled with a ton of storage! For me this is perfect as it means storage will never be a concern and I'm not paying a lot of money for things like FrontPage support although I do realize for some the lack of these facilities would be an issue. As a result it's good that Easy CGI offer each of these features in other plans and via add-ons.
Fortunately, the stripped down approach though doesn't apply to their unique control panel and customer service both of which are fantastic. The knowledge base and help section offer a lot of information and can help users out with a lot of their problems. Join this with 24/7 phone and email support you have a really strong package. Unfortunately there isn't a dedicated messaging support service, if there were then I'd be a lot happier but so far I've had email responses very quickly (typically 5-10 minutes) and the service has been good.
In conclusion, a good company offering something a little bit different at a decent price!
